“Britain’s a funny place,” I said.

“Bretaña es un lugar cómico,” yo dije.

“What do you mean, funny?” Mark asked.

“¿Qué quiere decir usted, cómico?” Mark preguntó.

I was sitting at a table on the terrace of a bar in Madrid with my friend Mark, who’s from England.

Yo estaba sentándome a una mesa en la terraza de un bar en Madrid con mi amigo Mark que es de Inglaterra.

We were both drinking cold drinks and eating tapas and talking about countries.

Nosotros estábamos los dos bebiendo bebidas frías y comiendo tapas y hablando sobre países.

“Well, it’s… different,” I said.

“Bien, es… diferente,” yo dije.

Observations on Britain

“There are so many contrasts and contradictions about Britain.

The people, for example.

When they sit on buses or trains, especially on the Tube*, they don’t usually look at anybody and nobody talks.

Cuando se sientan en autobuses o trenes, sobre todo en el Tube*, normalmente no miran a nadie y nadie habla.

But they like travelling to different countries and meeting different people.

Pero les gusta viajar a diferentes países y conocer a diferentes personas.

Another thing is their appearance.

I’ve seen lots of young people with red or blue hair and some of their clothes are, well, strange!”

Dialogue on British Identity

“You’re generalising,” said Mark.

“Usted está generalizando,” dijo Mark.

“Not all British people are reserved and not all young British people have red or blue hair.

And are you talking about the British or are you talking about the English?

Because we’re not all English, you know.

It’s called Britain for a reason.

“Yes, I know, and I know that I’m generalising.

I think the English, the Scots, and the Welsh are fascinating people and that Britain has a wonderful culture and history.

Every time I go there, something surprises me.”

“Well, you said you wanted to be a writer.

Perhaps you should write about Britain,” laughed Mark.

“Yes, perhaps I should.

That’s quite a good idea,” I answered.

Author’s Background and Inspiration

My name’s Antonio and I’m Spanish, but my father is American and we spent a long time in the United States when I was young.

Mi nombre es Antonio y soy español, pero mi padre es americano y pasamos mucho tiempo en los Estados Unidos cuando yo era joven.

Acabo de terminar la universidad.

I studied English and journalism in Salamanca.

Yo estudié inglés y periodismo en Salamanca.

Salamanca University is probably the most popular Spanish university among foreign students.

La Universidad de Salamanca probablemente es la universidad española más popular entre los estudiantes extranjeros.

Sometimes there were so many people from Britain around me that I almost forgot that I was in Spain.

A veces había tantas personas de Bretaña alrededor de mí que casi me olvidé de que estaba en España.

I made some good British friends who were studying in Salamanca and I love going to visit them in Britain.

Hice algunos buenos amigos británicos que estaban estudiando en Salamanca y me encanta ir a visitarlos en Bretaña.

So, when Mark said I should write about my experiences, I did.

Así, cuando Mark dijo que yo debería escribir sobre mis experiencias, lo hice.

I wrote about my first impressions, the country, the people, the culture, the food and, of course, the weather!
