In the elections of 1931, the victory was for the republican forces in the majority of the big cities. This forced Alfonso XIII to renounce the crown and leave Spain. On April 14, the Republic was proclaimed. The regime was an opportunity to democratize and modernize the country through a broad programme of reforms. The Republic had to face the crisis of 1929.
